What a sham of a display of a voting turnout for this most recent American Idol. Katherine AND Chris in the bottom 2? The best 2 singers left, and there they were, sweating it out. Katherine, the vanilla diva, had more to lose than Chris, so it's a good thing Mr. Daughtry was chosen by the public as the one to go home. See, Katherine can be successful doing pop-bubblegum bullshit produced by the great corporate machine that is American Idol. Chris, on the other hand, is a balls-out rocker who would've drowned in a sea of bleached-blonde hair and fake fingernails if he'd gone on to win the competition. I, for one, am glad that Chris lasted as long as he did because it gave millions of people a chance to experience how talented and passionate he is, but I'm also glad that he won't have to suffer through the tedium of being a corporate shill. He's got more verve and fire than any other contestant I've ever seen (with the notable exception of snowy-maned Taylor Hicks, who is one of this year's final 3) and that will play well with passionate and informed music fans who'll now get the chance to hear him hopefully produce music that suits him much more than anything American Idol could've created.
A few additional notes: Of COURSE Katherine was in the bottom 2 this week. It's just wrong to have 3 of the final 4 as guys, with poor ol' Katherine the lone lady, and then expect them to have even stakes singing ELVIS!! The guy's nickname is the KING for goodness sakes! How can a Queen sing the King and compare to even the Court Jester? It was unfair and petty at this stage of the competition, and if it was already set prior to the season starting, they should've done something to level the playing field. They didn't, and I thought she'd pay for it with a one-way trip back home. Fortunately, my favourite singer in the competition is still alive. She didn't look well tonight, she seemed lethargic and upset. I think she was also anticipating the long walk. Perhaps she simply wasn't feeling well. After the snow job she got from the producers, I wouldn't be surprised if she was simply disgusted.
I think Taylor is great and incredibly entertaining, but musically he's the least deserving and least talented contestant left. Elliot Yamin has all the charisma of one-eyed, one-eared, three-legged dog with no fur, but that boy can sing his teeth out (that MUST have been what happened to them). Taylor should've walked instead of Chris, but as I've said, this will be a huge blessing in disguise for him. Chris' rock career would've been hurt by winning American Idol (I can just hear the chants of "pop-boy" and "sellout" at his shows had he won and still made a rock album). Rock fans are notoriously (annoyingly so) anti-pop music and would've had no respect for him. Now, he gets his exposure, and still gets to make the music he wants without losing too much face. It was the wrong call America, and it's been proven yet again that the average public knows shit about shit when it comes to music. But for Chris don't despair; "Chris, you're going home" should be the sweetest words you ever hear. Rock on man, looking forward to your first REAL album.
